Sant Martí
Refurbishment of house between party walls
in the Sant Martí district of Barcelona

Managing the construction of a 128 m2 house for one family in Sant Martí, in Barcelona. The existing building, dating from 1920, contained a garage and workshop on ground floor and the first floor contained the apartment. These two independent spaces had to be rethought in order to achieve one living space across the two floors. The ground floor was reinvented to contain the living spaces used during the day, an open space that retains some symbolic elements from the original construction, and the first floor was changed to contain only the living spaces used at night. The staircase became the focus of the vertical relationship between these two, connected spaces.

Using the relevant specialization and knowledge necessary for a project of this kind, a lateral approach was applied across the whole building process, from the design stage to the construction. This included such decisions as the use of materials with low environmental impact and improving the energy efficiency of the whole building.
